Prime Minister Stephen Harper was on hand today for the official opening of the Ryerson Mattamy Athletic Centre ice-rink.

It’s on the top floor of the 70-year-old Maple Leaf Gardens (MLG) at Church and Carlton in downtown Toronto.

MLG is one of the original six NHL hockey franchises and was built-in 1931, it underwent extensive renovations and has been idle for the past 10 years. It is the only original six arenas still standing.

The new ice rink which will seat 2,796 will open September 6-9, 2012 and is just feet from the roof of the original ice surface where over 16,000 watched the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The Ryerson University is occupying three levels, with a complete athletic centre on one and a basketball and training facilities on the other two floors of the original 10 storey building.

Ryerson officially re-opens the ‘Carlton Street Mint’ at the old Maple Leaf Gardens as it is reborn, a term coined from Leaf diehards.

The original building which opened in 1931 was constructed for $1.5 million ($21.9 million in 2012 dollars) but renovation costs of the building were over $70 million, with almost $20 million from the Federal Government.

I was fortunate enough to be given a piece of hockey history during the construction process at Maple Leaf Gardens as I picked this brick from the outside of the MLG.

It’s something I shall cherish for the rest of my life, and can’t wait to see the first hockey game at the ‘NEW’ Maple Leaf Gardens Ryerson Mattomy Athletic Centre ice-rink.
