Coaches Corner (Don Cherry) He’s okay with visors, yeah right, not true. Was he forced to say that?

On Coaches Corner Saturday night Don Cherry said he’s okay with players wearing visors as Patrick Kane on the left of Chicago Blackhawks.

But was he told by higher-ups in HNIC (Hockey Night in Canada) that he had to change his view on visors? Since many times before he has complimented players who do not wear visors, as “look at him no visor” as if a player not wearing a visor is some sort of ‘real man’ which is very far from the truth.

Below you can see what Cherry had to say in 2011, about visors which got him into trouble again, and his dislike for Europeans and French Canadians.

Is this what a ‘real man’ looks like?

Cherry always speaks his mind, at least when he is told to change it. He’s a good broadcaster and we like him, but over the years he has been told to stop certain things and he complies. Many years ago he was a heavily against European players in the NHL and it seems he has conceded that, and now encourages Canadian and Toronto players when he gets the chance.

Players you are willing to take advice from this guy?

It’s been reported that about 75% of NHL players wear visors and the ones that do not are,  ‘real men?’

I don’t think so, they are wrongly following  the lead of Don Cherry, and in the worst case scenario could very easily lose an eye.  If they do, they could end their career, and would be sorry to admit it.

The simple answer to this problem, is make it mandatory for anyone coming from the minors to wear a visor since all players are now required to wear visors in the minor junior leagues. They have worn face protection since they were tykes.

Check out some of the other postings about what Don Cherry has had to say,    just click HERE.

For some very strange reason people, players, reporters think getting hit in the eye is a joke, and funny. It’s very far from that and could be career ending. I just don’t understand what is funny about getting hit in the eye, when you have the ability to prevent it with a piece of very efficient equipment called a visor. Below you will see the interview of Chris Pronger who received such an injury, which could have been 100% preventable.

Player protection number one

Toronto Police name-tags: Visible or hidden in their pockets. St. Jamestown senior claims no tags on push-in at his home

Toronto Police Service ‘Robo cops’ at the G20

Toronto, Canada - Several years ago the City of Toronto made it mandatory that on duty police must wear their personal name-tags on their uniforms at all times.

If that is the case, why are they attached to the uniforms with velcro, which allows them to be taken off quickly at anytime.

And it seems that is what they did on Sunday, at a senior’s apartment in St Jamestown complex at Wellesley/Sherbourne.

The resident says he opened the door and about seven burly bicycle policemen in uniform pushed their way into his apartment, without a warrant and no velcro name-tags on their uniforms.

Their number patches on their shoulders where also not visible because they had their yellow jackets on without name-tags. When asked, they never told him what they wanted, nor did they show a valid search warrant. One officer (unidentified) went as far to say, “We don’t need a warrant.”

That was Sunday morning, and then today, Monday, October 22/12 the same officers arrived again unidentified and no warrant, and no explanation about why they were there.

Once could be a mistake, but twice, with the same officers, same attitudes, something is wrong. They completed their searches each day and left with nothing. When they first arrived at 10am on Sunday morning they said “they were responding to a noise complaint,” but no charges were laid and there was no problem with noise.

The 61-year-old senior with several medical problems, called the local station and he told the officer who answered what had occurred. The officer asked if he “had problems with police” which is reasonable, but wouldn’t they still need a search warrant? He asked “what should I do” and at no time did the officer tell him to file a formal complaint. He asked if he could “speak to the Sergeant on duty” and she put him through to another general Sergeant voice mailbox, which was indicated full.

What it seems the police are trying to do in St Jamestown is commendable, as it seems they are trying to stop the spread of drugs throughout the community, which this senior supports.

No name-tag not acceptable, we see the velcro

But having his apartment raided by unidentified officers two days in a row and find nothing and offer no explanation or apologies, they have clearly crossed the line and answers are forthcoming.

You can see just above the watermark (DMB) this officer like many others at the G20 Summit in Toronto, had pulled his name-tag off, so they couldn’t be identified.

The big question, why don’t they just sew the name-tags onto their uniforms permanently, so they cannot take them off when they conduct a ‘raid’ without a warrant or explanation.

One officer (unidentified) as he was leaving said, “You shouldn’t have crack heads in your house,” which the senior says, he did not.

Annaleise Carr, 14, youngest person to make the 52.5 km swim across Lake Ontario, lands at CNE Sunday night Marilyn Bell Park

Toronto, Canada - Annaleise Carr, 14, made the 52.5 km swim across Lake Ontario, youngest teen ever to conquer this feat since Marilyn Bell in 1954 when she was only 18. Bell is now 73, and was on the rescue boats as she made her way across the lake.

Carr was raising funds for Trillium Camp, for children with cancer and succeeded in raising over $100,000 for her cause with donations are still coming in, her goal was originally to raise $50,000.

The swim started in Niagara-on-the-lake at 6:15 pm Saturday night and she endured the rough waters to make it to Marilyn Bell Park at the CNE grounds around 9:30 pm yesterday.

Carr’s attempt was to raise funds for the Camp Trillium which assists children with cancer, and her goal was to raise $50,000.

She will undoubtedly have some interesting stories to tell when she returns to school in September about how she completed such a wonderful accomplishment.

Donations to support Camp Trillium can be made through the website raiseathon.ca/arc/

Ryerson officially re-opens the ‘Carlton Street Mint’ at the old Maple Leaf Gardens as it is reborn

Prime Minister Stephen Harper was on hand today for the official opening of the Ryerson Mattamy Athletic Centre ice-rink.

It’s on the top floor of the 70-year-old Maple Leaf Gardens (MLG) at Church and Carlton in downtown Toronto.

MLG is one of the original six NHL hockey franchises and was built-in 1931, it underwent extensive renovations and has been idle for the past 10 years. It is the only original six arenas still standing.

The new ice rink which will seat 2,796 will open September 6-9, 2012 and is just feet from the roof of the original ice surface where over 16,000 watched the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The Ryerson University is occupying three levels, with a complete athletic centre on one and a basketball and training facilities on the other two floors of the original 10 storey building.

Ryerson officially re-opens the ‘Carlton Street Mint’ at the old Maple Leaf Gardens as it is reborn, a term coined from Leaf diehards.

The original building which opened in 1931 was constructed for $1.5 million ($21.9 million in 2012 dollars) but renovation costs of the building were over $70 million, with almost $20 million from the Federal Government.

I was fortunate enough to be given a piece of hockey history during the construction process at Maple Leaf Gardens as I picked this brick from the outside of the MLG.

It’s something I shall cherish for the rest of my life, and can’t wait to see the first hockey game at the ‘NEW’ Maple Leaf Gardens Ryerson Mattomy Athletic Centre ice-rink.

Total Recall hits theatres this week – Hollywood is filming in Toronto with Colin Farrell (Total Recall 2012)

New police car hits streets of Toronto

Colin Farrell

Toronto, Canada -  Colin Farrell   has been in town most of the summer and they are filming the newest remake of Sci-Fy thriller Total Recall,   (IMDB is your best place for any movie or TV info) mostly at the Toronto Film Studio in downtown, but yesterday and today, they actually closed one of the highways coming into the downtown core. For the rest of Tuesday, they had the Lakeshore Blvd. closed between Parliament and Jarvis Streets.

In a story today in the Toronto Star   they talk about some of the outrage at closing a major highway into the city. Things are better today, it seems they are off the Gardner Expressway but Lakeshore is still closed until 9pm tonight.
This is a remake of the Total Recall starring Arnold Schwarzenegger in 1990 and stars Farrell,  Ethan Hawke,   Jessica Biel and  Kate Beckinsale,   pictured here in

the Federal Police car. Also in a prominent role is Bryan Cranston, the crystal meth chemist from Breaking Bad on AMC, an excellent TV series.

If you look closely, on each side of the watermark (DMB) you can see the Driver/operator that sit under the mocked up Chrysler Federal Police car and do the driving and swiveling of the futuristic car, it’s not real. Later when they do the editing they will take out the bottom part of the car, I think. If you are interested in seeing all my pictures from the film shoot, they can be viewed in a larger format,  just   CLICK HERE.

This movie brings money to Toronto. That’s non-sense, they bring nothing to the city but headaches, it was fun in the beginning.

They park constantly on NO PARKING rush hour streets, they don’t buy food, they have free food on the site, they force most companies to give them almost free rental vehicles, they annoy the hell out of Toronto drivers, Richmond St is closed two lanes during rush hours, it goes on and on. They force us to stop walking by, instead of waiting, and shooting again.

They think they “OWN” our streets, especially “Flashpoint”  it looks cool but, too much is too much. These are OUR roads, build a road, and film it in YOUR studios. How does this make US money, non-sense, and it’s not Colin Farrell’s fault.

The young kids they have controlling the people who walk around or near the set, are not trained properly on how to treat people (citizens) in a polite, respectful manner. It has been reported that the film crew wanted to shut down Lakeshore Blvd. for 10 consecutive days, which was wisely, dismissed by the Toronto Film and Telivision Office, (TFTO.)

We all remember this from the 1990 Total Recall

Toronto Police Service: Gun violence – Just a bunch of buzz words, will they amount to anything?

Toronto Police Service Chief Bill Blair held a news conference today,  announcing a new ‘strategy’ on how to get control of the gun violence in the City of Toronto.

The city has 17 Divisions and they plan on redirecting patrols to different areas of the city at anytime, when trouble breaks out. Extending existing eight-hour shifts to 12 hours, he plans on increasing patrols to community events like the Caribbean Festival, where he will assign almost 500 officers. All officers will be asked to work longer shifts, (compulsory overtime) which puts them at risk, and has the Toronto Police Association given the Chief their blessing?

This sounds like double talk and buzz words, to let the public think they are doing something to protect the citizens. Buzz words such as, initiatives, resources, partners, innovations and outreach, all have one thing in common, they don’t mean anything to the criminals who are murdering our citizens.

He wants the public to “Feel safe” and hopes that they are safe.

What will the criminals do to bypass this ‘initiative’ will they just move somewhere else, where police cannot find them.

Why was Chief Blair not asked about ‘Stop and Frisk’ a program that appears to be working in New York City. It allows the police to ask anyone they find to be suspicious, to search them for guns at anytime.

The Chief was asked if he supports putting cameras into TCHC (Toronto Community Housing Corp) where many of this gun violence is taking place, at the moment there are very few cameras in TCHC housing units. He danced around that and said it’s not up to him, but thinks it would be best to have more cameras.

There still is apprehension by the public in the trouble areas of the city to report anything they know or see, including the recent deadly shootings at Scarborough’s Danzig Street.

Another option put forward is to evict persons convicted of drug and gun violence from TCHC properties.

Colorado Theatre shooting, 12 dead, does the ‘main stream media’ encourage such tragedies?

Colorado, USA - The 6000 armed/full body armoured shooter in the slaughter yesterday at Century 16 Theatre in Aurora, Colorado, 12 dead over 30 injured, does the main stream media have a part in this tragedy?

It was just wall to wall coverage all day on TV, radio, and in the newspapers, as incorrect information leaked out from the internet as well.

At the 7 pm (MST) news conference by Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates, you could tell by watching, Chief Oates was clearly trying to stay away from talking about the suspect, or giving any info about him. The media questions, concentrated on the suspect instead of the survivors, and it seemed like for the first time in a mass shooting, they wanted to keep the suspects name forgotten, not glorify this evil, mentally ill man.

The next news conference will be at 2pm (MST) 4 pm (EST) Saturday.

I think this is a good start, but it will never last?

One news media outlet says, “They will not mention the suspects name,” but we all know everyone will be looking to find out more about him.

And with the internet, you can find anything you want, it will not become the norm, sadly. The media are usually asking the questions that the public want to know, and that’s why they zero in on the suspect.

There was an interview on CNN’s Piers Morgan last night, where he interviewed the two parents, (Jamie Rohrs and Patricia Legarreta) that took their toddler to the movie premiere. The first question he asked, which twitter followers wanted to know, was, “Why did you take your toddler to a midnight movie.” He quickly stepped past that and asked them questions about how they escaped alive. The interview was very compelling and touching and I’m sure CNN will be showing it again this weekend, don’t miss it.

While watching their replies, especially the young man, it appeared he was suffering from PTSD while he was emotional and cried nearly throughout the entire interview. The horror of how to get out of the theatre and save his family. They experience it for about three minutes, our militaries experience it all day, everyday they are deployed in combat regions around the world.

It reminded me this was almost like what the military experience everyday in wars around the world, and some wonder why military are coming home in such bad shape.

Even the Chief of Police of Aurora, Dan Oates, had problems when he talked about what his officers had seen in the movie theatre, after the slaughter.

I agree, we must stop glorifying these few people who do such horrendous acts to put fear in the public, and the main stream media just laps it up. Can all media stop reporting the history, and names of these nut jobs, not likely?

How does nuclear radiation affect animals?

Toronto, Canada
– Many of us are animal lovers, and we have heard very little about the effects of the nuclear radiation on the animal kingdom in Japan and near the Fukusima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. The focus is centred on the residents, but what about the animals? The devastation of the earthquake, tsunami and now nuclear radiation that hit Japan on March 11, 2011 has killed many and displaced thousands but we always seem to forget about the domestic pets and animals in the area.
The nuclear radiation from the nuclear meltdown at Fukusima Daiichi, Japan affects those that have survived this tragedy and that means animals too. It is estimated there are 30,00 domestic pets affected by this and many residents are bringing them to the shelters with them. There was a YouTube video that can be seen below of one injured dog standing by and protecting his friend as rescuers come to save the two. Although many forget about the animal kingdom, animal lovers from all over the world have been concerned for the domestic pets and wildlife and how the radiation will affect them if they have survived this incident.
Dr Joanna Coote, Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) from the Toronto Humane Society took some time to explain how the radiation could have an impact on animals and wildlife that could have survived the tragedy.

“I guess it depends which animals you are referring to, so if we talk about dogs, cats, horses, cattle, pigs, goats, sheep those are all mammals, so the way that animals are affected by radiation will be quite similar to humans, they often worry about the cumulative radiation effect so that if you are exposed to certain levels of radiation over time they’re worried that there would be a cumulative effect of radiation that can cause dangerous levels.” said Dr. Coote.
“In animals they don’t really have a prolonged exposure to radiation, because they have such a short lifespan relative to humans,” she went onto say about farm animals, “If they are farming dairy, goats or chickens, it’s the issue with, one, the real exposure to radiation the way we get exposed in the atmosphere so there’s that exposure and then there’s the exposure they get from the vegetation that they are eating. And it’s also in the water, the runoff and the rain.”

“Birds and insects will be affected as well and they can spread the radiation as they fly miles from the danger zone but they have a very low life-span and then it becomes a problem for the food chain as the bird eats the contaminated insect or the bird eats a contaminated fish that’s a concern and then flies miles away and then the bird gets eaten by another predator and the cycle continues”

Tokyo, Japan - “Japan National Police Agency, on Tuesday (March 16, 2011) said, dead and missing has exceeded 12,000 and is expected to go well beyond this figure. Out of this number 4277 are confirmed dead with 2282 injured from the tsunami and earthquake, not including any that may die from nuclear radiation.

On Sunday (March 13, 2011), police chief of Miyagi, one of the prefectures hardest hit disaster, said the number of death toll is estimated at more than 10,000 in its own territory.” Story from WorldNews
Ontario Veterinary College spokesperson Barry Gunn said,

“There really isn’t anybody that can talk about your questions clearly, in general, the assumption is that any threat would be the same as it is for people, these animals might be exposed to radiation from food or water, some of the nuclear isotopes have a short half-life, and caesium has a half-life of 30 years so they disappear soon after exposure and I suppose the caesium will be around for a while in the soil.”
