Don Cherry, Coach’s Corner, ‘I believe Women shouldn’t be in male dressing rooms’ Cherry can’t stay away from controversy

The topic came up on Coach’s Corner last night about women reporters in male sports locker-rooms because of a situation last week when defenceman Duncan Keith of the Chicago Black Hawks made a comment to a women reporter in Vancouver. Other male reporters were suggesting that Keith was being sexist towards Team 1040 reporter Karen Thomson just after their lose to the Canucks at Rexall Place.

Don Cherry always has an opinion

As you can see in this tweet, Ron MacLean was not in complete agreement with Cherry. Cherry went on to say, “Equal opportunity, then why aren’t men in women’s dressing rooms?”

To which it came up about the players walking around naked and MacLean didn’t think that would be a good idea for men to be in women’s locker-rooms.

My belief is women shouldn’t even be commentators on male sports broadcasts and yes, I’m in agreement with Cherry. Is that politically correct, no. But it is my belief and they should keep women out of men’s locker rooms, period. There are plenty of women’s sports that need women to cover, and let’s keep them separate.

Was Duncan Keith sexist, not at all. He had just lost a game 3-1, and a women reporter asked if he thought a penalty should be called. All he said was, “We should get you as a ref, maybe, eh?” That does not seem like a sexist remark to me.

Let us know what you think of the controversy?

New Jersey Devils NHL, give me a break, they now have sign language for the singing of National Anthems

I’m all for inclusion, and we have seen it for many years, sign language (ASL) of political speeches, but tonight was a first for me.

‘Signing (ASL)’ the anthems at New Jersey Devils

New Jersey Devils have a women performing sign language for the ‘singing’ of the National Anthems.

Is that really necessary, since I thought most people know the words of their National Anthems.

It’s possible the New Jersey Devils received a lot of calls, I mean texts, from the hearing impaired community.

UPDATE: If you missed Don Cherry on Coaches Corner last week, they started off this weeks segment with the kiss on the cheek of points leader of the Leafs, Nasem Kadri in Ottawa. (YouTube below)

Don Cherry of HNIC fameCherry was on his rant again about the touch icing not being addressed in the NHL. This is where one team sends the puck the length of the ice and icing is not called until the receiving team touches the puck.

This causes both players to race to touch the puck first and in many cases can be career ending resulting from these chases into the end boards.

Cherry has always maintained this problem could be resolved if they just blow the whistle when the puck crosses the end goal line, but the NHL thinks the way it is, creates ‘excitement’ in the game, yeah right real excitement.

NHL thinks this is sooo exciting, not fans, except for serious injuries to players

Oh just a footnote, the Leafs beat the Devils, in New Jersey Satiurday night, 2-1.

Nazem Kadri of the Toronto Maple Leafs finally gets the respect he deserves, second hat-trick this year

It appears that Nazem Kadri has finally made a mark in the NHL and scored his second hat-trick this year, but the previous American management of Ron Wilson and Brian Burke tag team didn’t think he was worthy to play in the NHL. They have both been fired, thank goodness.

Kadri is now Leafs leading point leader

Kadri is currently sitting in sixth place in the NHL behind Patrick Kane of the Chicago Blackhawks, and there is still about 12 games to go before playoffs.

Go Leafs Go and maybe, just maybe we will see the playoffs for the first time in almost a decade.

Kadri even got the pleasure and endorsement of Don Cherry in the video above, with a kiss on the cheek as he did to Leaf favorite Doug Gilmour many years ago.

Coaches Corner (Don Cherry) He’s okay with visors, yeah right, not true. Was he forced to say that?

On Coaches Corner Saturday night Don Cherry said he’s okay with players wearing visors as Patrick Kane on the left of Chicago Blackhawks.

But was he told by higher-ups in HNIC (Hockey Night in Canada) that he had to change his view on visors? Since many times before he has complimented players who do not wear visors, as “look at him no visor” as if a player not wearing a visor is some sort of ‘real man’ which is very far from the truth.

Below you can see what Cherry had to say in 2011, about visors which got him into trouble again, and his dislike for Europeans and French Canadians.

Is this what a ‘real man’ looks like?

Cherry always speaks his mind, at least when he is told to change it. He’s a good broadcaster and we like him, but over the years he has been told to stop certain things and he complies. Many years ago he was a heavily against European players in the NHL and it seems he has conceded that, and now encourages Canadian and Toronto players when he gets the chance.

Players you are willing to take advice from this guy?

It’s been reported that about 75% of NHL players wear visors and the ones that do not are,  ‘real men?’

I don’t think so, they are wrongly following  the lead of Don Cherry, and in the worst case scenario could very easily lose an eye.  If they do, they could end their career, and would be sorry to admit it.

The simple answer to this problem, is make it mandatory for anyone coming from the minors to wear a visor since all players are now required to wear visors in the minor junior leagues. They have worn face protection since they were tykes.

Check out some of the other postings about what Don Cherry has had to say,    just click HERE.

For some very strange reason people, players, reporters think getting hit in the eye is a joke, and funny. It’s very far from that and could be career ending. I just don’t understand what is funny about getting hit in the eye, when you have the ability to prevent it with a piece of very efficient equipment called a visor. Below you will see the interview of Chris Pronger who received such an injury, which could have been 100% preventable.

Ryerson officially re-opens the ‘Carlton Street Mint’ at the old Maple Leaf Gardens as it is reborn

Prime Minister Stephen Harper was on hand today for the official opening of the Ryerson Mattamy Athletic Centre ice-rink.

It’s on the top floor of the 70-year-old Maple Leaf Gardens (MLG) at Church and Carlton in downtown Toronto.

MLG is one of the original six NHL hockey franchises and was built-in 1931, it underwent extensive renovations and has been idle for the past 10 years. It is the only original six arenas still standing.

The new ice rink which will seat 2,796 will open September 6-9, 2012 and is just feet from the roof of the original ice surface where over 16,000 watched the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The Ryerson University is occupying three levels, with a complete athletic centre on one and a basketball and training facilities on the other two floors of the original 10 storey building.

Ryerson officially re-opens the ‘Carlton Street Mint’ at the old Maple Leaf Gardens as it is reborn, a term coined from Leaf diehards.

The original building which opened in 1931 was constructed for $1.5 million ($21.9 million in 2012 dollars) but renovation costs of the building were over $70 million, with almost $20 million from the Federal Government.

I was fortunate enough to be given a piece of hockey history during the construction process at Maple Leaf Gardens as I picked this brick from the outside of the MLG.

It’s something I shall cherish for the rest of my life, and can’t wait to see the first hockey game at the ‘NEW’ Maple Leaf Gardens Ryerson Mattomy Athletic Centre ice-rink.

Toronto Maple Leafs new owners ‘change the focus to winning’ what a bunch of ‘Gobbledygook’

Toronto, Canada - Yes the MLSE (Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment) is about to be taken over by Rogers and Bell   in a deal struck last year when the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan sold their part of the organization for $ 3.1 billion.

But to suggest that they now plan on concentrating on winning and getting into the playoffs, is a real joke, to anyone who knows anything about the sports scene in Toronto.

MLSE own the Toronto Maple Leafs, Toronto Raptors, AHL Marlies, Toronto FC Soccer team, and the Air Canada Centre. It’s close to being one of the most successful sports franchises in the world, money wise, and yet have had very little success on the field or the ice recently.

The Leafs haven’t made the NHL playoffs since 2004, although the Toronto Marlies advanced and lost the AHL Calder Cup final just last year.

The Raptors haven’t been to the playoffs since 2007 when they won the NBA Atlantic division, and haven’t visited the playoffs since 2008.

This new concept ‘on winning’ seems a little, too little, too late.

But then the Toronto sports fans just put up with it, and keep buying the tickets, and keep watching and hoping for a winning combination.

Will it happen? We hope so, but hope is all we have to offer and yet the MLSE just keeps getting richer and richer. We haven’t seen a Stanley Cup since 1969 and still the Air Canada Centre is the most sold-out arena in North America.

CBC hockey host ‘Ron MacLean’ compares NHL playoff hockey players, to the heroic, dedicated responders of 911 attacks in New York??

UPDATE: Don Cherry trys to make an apology for Ron MacLean, and it just doesn’t cut it, very lame.

The CBC commented in a statement and it was just as lame. What he said was wrong.

At the start of the NHL’s Washington Capitals, New York Rangers playoff game Wednesday which Rangers lost 2-1, Ron MacLean a CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation – Hockey Night in Canada) host, compared the players to the 911 responders.

Wow, someone at CBC blew it, and I suspect MacLean was just reading a script. But nobody in the whole HNIC crew ever thought this was way out of line, it’s embarrassing and very inappropriate.

Usually it’s always MacLean’s sidekick Don Cherry who makes all the controversial comments, but of course, Cherry is only stating his opinions.

Not everyone in the world is a hockey fan, but I am, and that introduction to the start of the playoff game was way out of line.

There is no comparison whatsoever with 911 responders and playoff hockey. Hockey is entertainment for the viewers and the tragedy that occurred in New York in 2001, was real life and one of the worst tragedies in my lifetime.

We will anxiously await for an apology/statement from CBC and HNIC and it better come quick. Nice try CBC, doesn’t cut it.

I don’t think any apology could overcome the hurt and horror of any victims hearing this terrible introduction to a hockey game, in the way it was said.

UPDATE NHL playoffs – Empty net goal by Dainius Zubrus of Devils, would it have been an awarded goal?

Newark, NJ -  New Jersey Devils beat Philadelphia Flyers 4-2 on Sunday and in the last minute Flyers pulled their goalie in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference semifinal. Devils player Dainius Zubrus grabbed the loose puck and headed towards the empty net, and was pulled down (hooked/tripped) by a Flyers player, feet from the open net, and scored his second goal of the final.

The referee put his hand up to call a penalty while Zubrus of the Devils was pulled down, but was it an ‘awarded goal’ or a penalty the referee was going to call? If it was an ‘awarded goal’ why did the referee not blow his whistle?

In the last minute of the second period Zubrus almost got a head injury as Claude Giroux of the Flyers took a head shot to him which will be reviewed by NHL VP disciplinarian Brendan Shanahan today.

Claude Giroux was out earlier (Dec/2011) in the season for himself receiving a head shot and suffered a concussion which he fully recovered.  Zubrus was not seriously injured and returned to the game.
