It’s on the top floor of the 70-year-old Maple Leaf Gardens (MLG) at Church and Carlton in downtown Toronto.
MLG is one of the original six NHL hockey franchises and was built-in 1931, it underwent extensive renovations and has been idle for the past 10 years. It is the only original six arenas still standing.
The Ryerson University is occupying three levels, with a complete athletic centre on one and a basketball and training facilities on the other two floors of the original 10 storey building.
The original building which opened in 1931 was constructed for $1.5 million ($21.9 million in 2012 dollars) but renovation costs of the building were over $70 million, with almost $20 million from the Federal Government.
It’s something I shall cherish for the rest of my life, and can’t wait to see the first hockey game at the ‘NEW’ Maple Leaf Gardens Ryerson Mattomy Athletic Centre ice-rink.
