Elliot Lake, Ontario - “Rescue crews have been called off the scene of a fatal mall collapse in Elliot Lake, Ontario: The structure is simply too dangerous to send people into.”
This cannot be true, in Ontario, we just quit searching because of the dangers to rescuers? Isn’t that why we have extensively trained expert rescuers, for times such as this?
This was at Algo Mall, the only major one in town, 100 miles west of Sudbury and it is just a two storey structure with a parking lot on top, like most malls in North America and around the world.
What would have happened if we received an earthquake the size of Haiti, would we have just left everyone to die after two days? This is unacceptable, and downright embarrassing, to the residents of this great province and the residents of Elliot Lake, largely a retirement community. Click map to enlarge.
After a lengthy protest from the survivors looking for their loved ones, and a call to Premiers Dalton McGuinty’s office they are now taking a second look, and rightfully so.
Hopefully, rescue efforts will get underway as soon as possible, and the remaining missing people can be saved.
The next step must be to conduct a thorough investigation on why the rescue efforts were called off after just two days, to let possibly surviving victims die in the rubble while many wanted to help.
Let’s get our priorities straight, and save people, even when there may be a possible risk, we deserve it to all our residents.
UPDATE:Two bodies have been removed and rescuers believe there are no more to find.
BELLEFONTE, Pennsylvania - Many of the victims (now survivors) of Jerry Sandusky, 68, were told by him “They will never believe you” as he would sexually abuse young boys at his home and in the shower at Penn State University.
Sandusky who was a respected coach for many years was accused of 52 sexual assaults against young boys from 7-17 years-old over a 14 year period. It was finally reduced to 48 charges, and he was found guilty of 45 and not guilty of three, yesterday at a Bellefonte, Pennsylvania court.
In a rather quick trial ( two weeks) for such horrific crimes, Sandusky would show up at court with a smile on his face, but left yesterday, not smiling, as he will likely spend the rest of his life in prison. The jury reached the verdict in just 21 hours of deliberations.
The makeup of the jury was seven women and five men and many had connections to Penn State, but it didn’t seem to matter.
In total there were 10 victims, but only eight took the stand and the youngest, was just 18 years-old. The abuse continued over a 14 year timeline, and the first accusation was back in 1998 when a mother came forward and accused him of abuse of her son.
Once the verdict was announced, Sandusky’s lawyer Joe Amendola came forward to boos and jeers and tried to explain how his client was railroaded, because he was overruled on many occasions by the judge. Throughout his statement he was heckled and someone came down the court-house steps to tell him he had two minutes left, and the crowd cheered in applause. He plans on appealing, but it doesn’t seem there are any grounds, and highly unlikely any appeals court will overturn this decision by 12 independent jurors.
The states Attorney General Linda Kelly (R) made a campaign statement after the verdict was announced and it seemed to go on forever. She referred to Sandusky as a “serial child predator who committed horrific acts. Now he is being held accountable for his crimes.”
Sandusky was led off in handcuffs and will most likely be in protective custody in State Prison for the rest of his life. He will be sentenced on all charges within 90 days, and yet his lawyer Amendola says he will “APPEAL.”
One of the victim’s mother said, “Nobody wins, we’ve all lost.”
One of the victims, (survivor) said after the verdict, “Thanks God he’s in jail.”
Defense Attorney Joe Amendola’s last words were, “Essentially, the sentence Jerry will receive will be a life sentence,” which drew a huge applause.
Best Gore: “The video is currently not available. I apologize for inconvenience.” It’s still there just harder to find, follow instructions on YouTube.
UPDATE: June 18/2012 -Luca Rocco Magnotta (29) returned to Montreal from Berlin by military transport and arrives back in Canada to face murder charges.
The plane landed in Montreal just after 7pm Monday, from 10-day world-wide warrant on Interpol and didn’t receive the fanfare he so deeply desires.
UPDATE: June 5/2012 - Montreal police held a news conference this afternoon and announced Magnotta has waived extradition in a Berlin court today. He will now be returned to Canada to face charges related to this murder. It is unknown how long it will take for him to return, but it is expected it will be a couple of weeks.
There are also reports human remains have turned up at Vancouver schools, and not sure if they have any connection to the Magnotta murder case. Montreal police had said the body parts, head, hand and foot were still missing.
Berlin, Germany -Luka Rocco Magnotta, 29, was arrested at an cybercafé in Germany for the murder of a student in Montreal.
He is accused of dismemberment of Chinese National student Lin Jun, 33, who was studying computer science at Montreal’s Concordia University. He was spotted in the internet café while he was surfing to read stories about himself. He tried to use another name when questioned but finally said “Okay, You’ve got me” to put an end to the international manhunt for his arrest. The self described “bisexual porn actor” went with the police for further investigation.
It all started last week when body parts were sent to the head offices of the political parties in Canada. Further investigation by the Montreal police recovered a torso in a laneway, and lead them to Magnotta’s apartment where the alleged dismembering took place.
Montreal police are on their way to Germany to start extradition process to return Magnotta back to Canada to face charges.
Police have admitted that the video of the murder does not show the identity of the person who murdered Jun, since the person was wearing a mask during the attack.
Three years ago a person who called themselves Luka Rocco Magnotta wrote a blog in Toronto HERE, on “How to completely disappear and never be found,” but it seems it does not work.
It seems to me this strange man just loves publicity and was revealed by using social media and has now been caught by using social media.
Toronto, Canada -In a fluke shot from centre ice Norfolk’s Mike Kostka shoots the puck into the Marlies corner and it goes off a stanchion and directly into the net. Norfolk Admirals are now winning best of seven series, 3-0 in AHL Calder Cup Finals.
In one of the most bizarre shots, Norfolk’s Kostka shoots the puck from centre ice and it hits the far corner where the glass is held on the rink-side. Marlies goalie Ben Scrivens goes behind the net anticipating the puck coming around, but it bounces off the stanchion directly into the empty net.
The sellout crowd of 8,084 (extra seats were added) were in shock as they awaited to see the replay on the scoreboard.
It took a while for them to find the right angle to show the shot, and many fans thought they might not replay the fluke bounce.
Kostka who was raised locally in Etobicoke, was just doing what defencemen do, shoot it in and follow up, but even he was surprised by the unusual bounce at 9:09 of the first over-time.
Right at the end of the first period, Norfolk had questioned a possible goal, but the officials finally decided it didn’t go in, after consulting with the goal judge Ed Butler, to the rousing applause of the fans.
Head coach of Norfolk, Jon Cooper said after the game, “I’m sick to my stomach for Scrivens, it was a tough break for the kid, but I would rather it go in our favour than theirs. Toronto pushed in the first, and was clearly the better team in the first period.”
Norfolk has done very well this year with 42 wins in the last 44 games, but because of the AHL scheduling, these are the first three games Marlies have ever played them.
The Marlies must now win the final three games against Norfold with the next two at Ricoh Coliseum on Saturday and Sunday at 3pm, they will also be broadcast on Sportsnet One. If necessary, the seventh game would be back in Norfolk, Virginia and broadcast on LeafsTV.
It’s the first time in about 45 years Toronto has ever seen professional hockey in June, let’s hope it’s not the last. Because of the warm weather, even extra air conditioning was attached to the building almost 100 year old Ricoh Coliseum
The original Coliseum was built by Mayor T.L. Chruch as the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in 1921 and at the time was the largest facility in North America before the Maple Leafs Gardens was built in 1931.
It was renovated in 2003 and an artificial ice pad was added to the facility as well as extra seats.
Toronto, Canada -Christopher Husbands has been charged with murder in the killing of Ahmed Hassan and six other patrons were shot at the Eaton Centre this past weekend.
Husbands is awaiting trial for a sexual assault from 2010 when he was under house arrest.
One pregnant women was trampled while people rushed to get out of the mall, however she is recovering in hospital with her unborn child.
A 13-year-old boy visiting Toronto for the day from Port Hope (two hours east of Toronto) was also shot in the head and is recovering well in the hospital but still in critical condition.
Police have not said what kind of gun was used and some reports have indicated it was a machine gun, but police did not disclose any further information. There were at least 12 shots fired in the crowded food court in the basement of the mall which is still closed.
Husbands is known to police, but for some reason they have not released a picture of him to the media.
He is in custody and his next court date will be in August, but must attend court for sexual assault charge from 2010, on June 25th. The issue of bail has not been addressed but it is expected he will be held until trial.
UPDATE: June 6/2012 - It was revealed today that Husbands had been working for the City of Toronto in their after school program at Stan Wadlow Park Clubhouse in East York. He had been under house arrest when he went to the Eaton Centre, and allegedly shot Hassan.
The city has said as of today, they will do background checks on all employees, since one was never done on Husbands. Parents are outraged that he could work around children, while he was out on bail for sexual assault and drugs.
The city is also changing their hiring guidelines to weed out anyone with a serious criminal record.
New York City - The whole plan to ban any drinks over 16 ounces is a good idea, but it’s just a ruse to stop retailers from increasing sales. NYC’s health department has suggested to eliminate sugary drinks to combat overweight citizens.
Has anyone ever noticed that sugary drinks have just been getting bigger and bigger. Why do retailers do that? They don’t want people to get fat, they want to make more money.
If they can give you more than you want, they can make more money. And in most cases people don’t want the huge sizes, but they are sucked into these self serving ‘combos’when people can’t make their own decisions.
Why have the 10 ounce cans become obsolete? I go into a store and want to buy a regular sized can, and I can’t find them anymore. Is that by design, by retailers and merchants?
You bet, they don’t care if you throw the remaining drink away, they got your money already.
I don’t want aLARGE drink I just want the 10 ounce (355ml) but it’s hard to find.
Let’s be honest, they do it to increase sales, and most people buy way to much and just think of all the teaspoons of sugar, yes almost 10 in a 20 oz bottle.
The NYC Health Department says:
“The Mayor’s Task Force on Obesity states that “Americans consume 200-300 more calories daily than 30 years ago, with the largest single increase due to sugary drinks.” Obesity has led to a big increase in the prevalence of Type II diabetes, heart disease, asthma, and other problems. The ban would apply to all sugary drinks larger than 16 fluid ounces and will come into effect 6 months after the approval by the Board of Health on June 12.”
But people have already figured out how to beat the system if it passes, just buy two 16 ounces.
It’s like the movie theatres, if you ask for a small popcorn, it will feed the whole family, and if you ask for smaller, they call it ‘kids size’ to embarrass you into not buying it. Within the last decade sizes have just grown and grown.
And so have the patrons.
What about Cappuccino’s and milkshakes, they get a pass?
